In 2014 I began merging a gestural style of painting with a geometric and minimal sensibility, combining abstract organic and geometric forms, and creating a less activated canvas. These paintings had a restricted palette, and reflected the theme of aging, mortality and the passage of time. This series was a dialectic between past and present, control and chaos, and permanence and transcendence. Techniques were developed that mirrored the meaning of the work.
In 2016-2017, switching the format from a 48x38 rectangle, and working again in squares, form, space, edges and color became a priority against a square format on linen. In one series influenced by a residency in Israel, each painting borrowed it's composition from the previous painting. These pieces seemed like a tribe, with genetic links. In the most current paintings, form and color are still primary while I experiment. Such as, sewing and collaging the canvas, leaving areas of linen bare and merging the boundaries of drawing, painting and collage. Many of my oils, no matter how abstract, may refer to the female body. (An earlier series was an intentional exploration of the female body and power.) However, the abstracted and deconstructed figure is not objectified, but rather, the view is an empathic one, where the female form is viewed from the inside out. Through out all my oils, is a love of the materials.
I also have a collage practice. These works on paper contain old paintings and drawings, maps, buttons and found objects, once again creating something new from the re-purposed old paintings. These collages verge on being sculptural, as my paintings combine other media and drawing blurring the lines of painting, drawing and sculpture. Although recent work seems to emphasize the formal elements of art, there is always an emotional or psychological component. An artist's gift, is to understand uncertainty, conflict and human yearnings and make those manifest in visual language. My art reflects triumphs, joys, sorrows, losses and the complexity of the human condition.
